The purposes of these workouts are described in the course website as:
Workout 1:
Within this workout you will use the word processor to
compose, format, and publish a lesson plan about a selected topic. This 1-3 page
document will focus on the selection, adaptation, and production of a lesson
plan that relates to your current employment/interest. For example, if your
interest focuses on ecology you might go on-line and find an interesting middle
school level lesson plan about aquatic habitats. You would then adapt that
lesson plan (make sure you include a proper citation for the work that you are
using) to fit your intended audience and format it to fit this assignment’s
requirements.
Workout 2:
Within this workout you will use desktop publishing software
(MS Publisher) to create a tri-fold informational brochure about some element
related to your employment/interest. For example, if your interest is focused on
the science of astronomy, you could create a brochure that would inform people
about a local event that will occur at the next meeting of the astronomy club.
You could include pictures of some new instruments that have been obtained by
the club, what the purpose of the club is, and why the study of astronomy should
be important to all people. It may also include a section for whom to contact
for more information about the club and meeting times. Adapt the brochure in
order to address all of the requirements of this workout.
Workout 3:
Within this workout you will develop and format a spreadsheet
that incorporates and analyzes data relevant to your selected course
interest/employment. For example, if you have an interest in "beef production in
Argentina," a possible spreadsheet might include figures for the tons of beef
produced in Argentina, the US and several other countries during the 1970’s,
1980’s, and 1990’s. Averages could be calculated within the spreadsheet and
charts for comparisons can be created and presented.
Workout 4:
Within this workout you will develop and format a basic
database (within MS Excel) that is relevant to your selected course theme. The
information within the database will then be sorted, filtered, and merged in
various ways. For example, if you have selected a theme such as "caves and their
inhabitants," the database may consist of information about different caves
found within the Midwest, addresses, dates of discovery, unique characteristics,
types of inhabitants, etc. This information can then be filtered and sorted to
find specific caves that offer specific types of geological formations, etc. In
addition, information can be merged in order to produce labels for mailers or
other uses.
Workout 5:
Frequently as you go out into the public school settings,
teachers are using interactive white boards within their classroom. These pieces
of technology usually consist of a large white display area that connects to a
computer and a projector. The computer’s desktop is projected on to the board
and the users control the computer through a pen, finger, or some other device.
This workout will allow you to explore, try out, and practice using one such
device located in 3295 and/or 3288 BRNG.
